One of the important functions of the Legal Profession Qualifying Board Malaysia ('Board') as provided in section 5 of the Legal Profession Act 1976 (Act 166) is to decide on the qualifications which may entitle a person to become a 'qualified person' for the purposes of Act 166. A 'qualified person" may be admitted as an advocate and solicitor if he fulfils the requirements as set out in section 11 of Act 166, including serving the prescribed period of pupillage. Hence, it is critical for those intending to pursue a law course/ programme at undergraduate level with the ultimate aim of becoming a legal practitioner in the country to ensure that the law degree or qualification is one which will enable the holder to be eventually admitted as an advocate and solicitor.
A person must have one of these qualifications in order to be a 'qualified person' under Act 166:
