Q1: Who can apply for the Certificate of Exemption from the Bahasa Malaysia Qualifying Examination?

A: All pupils serving their period of pupilage with at least a Credit in Bahasa Malaysia at SPM level or its equivalent can apply for the said Certificate.


Q2: When and how can a pupil apply for the Certificate of Exemption?

A: Application should be made before the pupil is called to the Bar. The application can be submitted via Sistem Permohonan Pengecualian/ Peperiksaan Kelayakan Bahasa Malaysia. Payment in the amount of RM150/- (see the Bahasa Malaysia Qualifying Examination (Qualified Persons) Fees Rules 1984*) should be made by online payment) .


Q3: How does one apply to sit for the Bahasa Malaysia Qualifying Examination?

A: The application can be submitted via Sistem Permohonan Pengecualian/ Peperiksaan Kelayakan Bahasa Malaysia and the payment in the amount of RM350/-* should be made by online payment.


Q4: When and where is the Bahasa Malaysia Qualifying Examination held?

A: The Office of the Board shall inform the registered applicants of the time and date of the said Examination which is held at the premises of the Office of the Board.


Q5: How is the Bahasa Malaysia Qualifying Examination conducted?

A: The Examination is an oral examination conducted by a panel of three (3) members appointed by the Board comprising of one (1) member of the Board as its Chairman and one (1) representative each from the Attorney General's Chambers and the Bar Council. Candidates will be given a legal passage to read beforehand which they will then be asked to translate into Bahasa Malaysia. Candidates will also be tested on their understanding of the given passage, current legal issues and/ or proficiency in the national language.
